Local Produce and Farm Sources

Healthy Tips & Understanding the Language

Knowing what food labels mean can help you make healthier choices.

Co-ops  are small local markets that work with nearby farms to sell fresh, local foods. They often focus on natural and ethical farming. Some require a membership fee, but they support small farms and your local community.

Egg Labels  can be confusing.

  • Free-Range means hens go outside sometimes, but not for long.
  • Pasture-Raised means hens have lots of outdoor space and eat a natural diet.
→ These eggs usually have more nutrients and better flavor.

Beef Labels  matter too.

  • Grass-Fed cows eat only grass. This makes the meat leaner and higher in healthy fats.
  • Grain-Fed cows eat corn or soy to grow faster.
    → Choose “100% Grass-Fed”
    when possible for better quality.

Antibiotic-Free & Hormone-Free

  • Antibiotic-Free means animals weren’t given medicine that can lead to resistant bacteria.
  • Hormone-Free is important for beef and dairy. (Hormones aren’t allowed in chicken or pork.)
Small farms often avoid these even if not on the label.
  •

Organic vs. Conventional Produce

  • Organic means no harmful chemicals or GMOs were used. It’s usually higher in nutrients.
  • Conventional may use synthetic pesticides and herbicides.
    → Choose organic
for foods you eat with the skin (like apples or berries).

Why Shop Local?

  • Fresher, healthier food
  • Supports local farms
  • Better for the environment
  • Strengthens your community
