Strategies for Success and Sustainable Weight Loss

Society has imposed a culture of unrealistic expectations when it comes to physical appearance. Weight loss plans that promise fast results are usually overly restrictive, unsustainable and can result in disordered eating and rebound weight gain, keeping the cycle going. Sustainable weight loss involves figuring out the underlying cause and making changes that work for your lifestyle which include healthy eating and mindful exercise that you enjoy, while lowering your risk of disease and improving mental health.

Fever in Pregnancy: What’s Safe, What’s Not, and the Tylenol Debate

Fever during pregnancy can be concerning—and for good reason. Elevated body temperature, especially in early pregnancy, has been linked to increased risks for complications if left untreated. At the same time, many moms-to-be are understandably cautious about medications, particularly acetaminophen (Tylenol), which has recently come under scrutiny. So how do you safely lower a fever while protecting both you and your baby? Let’s take a closer look.

Fevers are usually a sign that your body is fighting an infection. In pregnancy, however, prolonged high fevers (above 101–102°F) may increase the risk of preterm labor, neural tube defects, or stress on the developing baby. Treating a fever is often necessary—but how you treat it is where the conversation begins.

For decades, acetaminophen (Tylenol) has been the go-to fever reducer in pregnancy. It’s generally preferred over ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen, which can cause complications such as premature closure of the ductus arteriosus, kidney problems, or miscarriage risk. But here’s the catch: recent research has raised questions about acetaminophen’s long-term safety when used during pregnancy or early childhood. Studies are mixed—some meta-analyses show an increased risk of autism with prenatal exposure, while large population studies do not. The bottom line? We don’t know for certain—but biologically, the concern is plausible.

From a functional medicine perspective, Tylenol itself isn’t toxic—but when your body metabolizes it, a small portion is converted into a byproduct called NAPQI. This byproduct must be neutralized by glutathione, the body's primary antioxidant. Normally, the liver’s glutathione (GSH) detoxifies NAPQI. An overdose of Tylenol depletes GSH, leading to NAPQI buildup and subsequent cell death. Infants are particularly vulnerable to NAPQI toxicity due to several factors: immature liver metabolism, rapid depletion of GSH stores, slower drug clearance leading to cumulative toxicity, and increased risk for premature infants. Each dose of Tylenol consumes glutathione, thereby reducing the body's antioxidant defenses. Low glutathione levels can result in oxidative stress, inflammation, and disruption of the gut microbiome. These processes are also associated with neurodevelopmental concerns, including autism.

This does not mean “never use Tylenol.” Fevers in pregnancy require thoughtful management. Tylenol is still considered the safest conventional choice, but from a functional medicine perspective, it’s best used cautiously and strategically—only when essential, at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration, with added support for your antioxidant and detox systems. Consider pairing it with supports like N-acetylcysteine (NAC), liposomal glutathione, or antioxidant-rich nutrients (selenium, alpha-lipoic acid, vitamin C). These can help replenish glutathione and reduce oxidative stress. Additional gentle and safe strategies include rest, fluid intake (water, coconut water, bone broths), immunomodulatory nutrients (rich in vitamin C and zinc), and thermoregulatory techniques (tepid baths, cool compresses, light attire). However, avoid ice baths, as these can actually increase your temperature due to shivering.

Do not ignore a high or persistent fever—take Tylenol if you need it. Avoid ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin. Call your provider if you have a fever that does not resolve with Tylenol or cooling measures, or if you have a fever accompanied by rash, stiff neck, severe headache, contractions, or decreased fetal movement, or if you have concerns about infections like UTI, flu, or COVID.

Your health decisions during pregnancy are never black-and-white—they’re about weighing immediate benefits against long-term risks. With the right information and support, you can make empowered choices for both you and your baby.

NAD+ stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. It is a coenzyme central to metabolism, and its main function is to transfer electrons from one molecule to another. NAD+ is essential for over 500 enzymatic reactions and exists in two forms: an oxidized form (NAD+) and a reduced form (NADH). These two forms of NAD are known as a "redox couple," a term that describes a reduced (the "red" in redox) and oxidized (the "ox" in redox) form of the same atom or molecule. The term "oxidized" can be misleading, as it does not necessarily require oxygen. Redox reactions involve the gaining or losing of electrons. When something becomes oxidized, it loses electrons, while something that is reduced gains electrons.

In the context of NAD+, redox reactions are a key component of cellular energy creation. When NAD+ is converted to NADH, it gains two things: first, a charged hydrogen molecule (H+) and, next, two electrons. As electrons are negatively charged, the combination of the positively charged NAD+ and H+, coupled with two electrons, effectively cancels each other out, neutralizing the resulting NADH molecule. This is why NADH does not have a "+" sign next to it. The charge of a molecule informs how it interacts with other molecules; for example, NADH can’t perform the functions of NAD+, and vice versa.

Generally speaking, it is better to maintain a higher NAD+ than NADH ratio. Increased NADH levels can cause reductive stress, elevate cellular ROS (reactive oxygen species) levels, and lead to insulin resistance, insulin deficiency, and cell death. Thus, restoring NAD+ can help decrease redox imbalance in diabetes and plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including metabolism, DNA repair, gene expression, cellular aging, and immune cell function.

Aging is accompanied by a gradual decline in tissue and cellular NAD+ levels. This decline is linked to numerous aging-associated diseases, including cognitive decline, cancer, metabolic disease, sarcopenia, and frailty. Many of these aging-associated diseases can be slowed down or even reversed by restoring NAD+ levels. Therefore, targeting NAD+ metabolism has emerged as a therapeutic approach to mitigate age-related diseases and extend human lifespan.

There are ways to increase NAD+ naturally by making necessary lifestyle changes. Regular physical exercise is one of the simplest methods; workouts require more NAD+ for energy, prompting our bodies to produce more. Another way to boost NAD+ is through the diet by providing NAD+ precursors such as tryptophan, nicotinamide mononucleotide, and niacin (B3). These nutrients can be found in foods rich in B3, like beef, salmon, eggs, and avocado, or by adding fermented foods and drinks like sauerkraut, kefir, and kombucha.

We understand that it can be quite challenging to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen to keep your NAD+ levels high, especially when living a hectic lifestyle filled with work, multiple responsibilities, and pressure—where you might need that much-needed energy boost. In such cases, supplements can be a viable option. While both oral supplements and IV therapy can raise NAD+ levels, they are not equivalent. A significant amount of NAD is lost when taken orally due to issues like gut absorption and cardiovascular fitness. In contrast, an NAD+ injection or infusion can circumvent these obstacles by delivering NAD directly into the bloodstream and cells for immediate and complete absorption.

Off-Label Use of Cialis - Yes, Women Can Take it Too!

Primarily designed and FDA-approved for men with erectile dysfunction (ED), clinical trials have explored both the potential risks and benefits of the off-label use of Cialis for women.

Erectile Dysfunction in men is a known indicator of underlying peripheral vascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, or cardiovascular disease which increases their risk of stroke and heart attack. Cardiovascular disease in women parallels the risk in men. Women’s cardiovascular systems are partially protected by their reproductive hormones until they reach menopause. Early initiation of menopausal hormone therapy within 10 years of menopause further reduces their cardiovascular disease risk. However, along with hormone therapy, a daily dose of Cialis may also reduce or mitigate cardiovascular risk.

In addition to the cardiovascular benefits of Cialis for women, the sexual benefits are also significant. Some of the sexual benefits of Cialis for women include improved sexual arousal, enhanced vaginal lubrication, and stronger orgasms. Beyond the physical aspects, Cialis can help boost confidence and reduce the psychological stress associated with female sexual dysfunction.

Understanding the safety profile of Cialis is paramount prior to use. While Cialis is generally well tolerated, potential side effects for women can include headache, indigestion, back pain, muscle aches, flushing and nasal congestion. Additionally, the dosage should be tailored to the individual, factoring in overall health, the presence of any sexual dysfunction, and specific needs. Cialis can also interact with various medications, including nitroglycerin, alpha blockers for blood pressure and certain CYP3A4 inhibitors. Therefore, caution is used when prescribing to avoid adverse interactions.

The growing research of Cialis is encouraging women to be proactive towards their sexual health, exploring available options while seeking professional medical advice to navigate their journey safely and effectively. In addition to Cialis, there is now an FDA-approved peptide for Female premenopausal women with acquired or generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).

Treating Autoimmune Disease: Healing From the Inside Out

Autoimmune disease occurs when the body’s immune system malfunctions, typically causing an overreaction in the immune response. Getting an accurate diagnosis can be challenging and is sometimes overlooked simply because the symptoms are vague and the standard lab panels are insufficient. Even when an accurate diagnosis is determined, mainstream medicine often falls short when it comes to effective treatment. Traditional medical management of autoimmune disease involves suppressing the immune system, which can alleviate some of the symptoms but in many cases leads to other concerns and doesn’t really get to the root of the problem. Let’s dig a little deeper and look outside of the box. There are natural options that better manage and regulate immune function, while preventing further damage.

Identifying triggers is essential to address the underlying cause of autoimmune disease. One of the more obvious triggers is inflammation. Since approximately 70% of our immune system starts in the gut, it seems sensible to start there first. The gut is our first line of defense for any illness, but especially with autoimmune disease. The digestive system serves as an immune barrier that protects your body from pathogens and other invaders. If the lining of your digestive tract is porous - a condition known as leaky gut syndrome - the barrier is compromised, allowing intruders such as bacteria and undigested food to enter your bloodstream. This, in turn, causes your immune system to launch an attack on the intruders, which may lead to autoimmune disease. Nourishing your microbiome with prebiotics and probiotics can help promote the growth of “good bacteria" in your gut, while consuming collagen-rich foods and taking appropriate supplements, amino acids, or peptides can help strengthen the lining of your digestive tract and repair the damage. The bottom line here is that a healthy gut equates to a healthy immune system, adequate absorption of essential nutrients and lowered levels of inflammation.

It is very possible to heal, and it starts from within. An excellent first step is to get tested for food intolerances. It may sound surprising, but even foods that are considered “healthy” could be triggering an inflammatory response in a person that has an autoimmune condition. It is important to note, however, that food allergies are rarely connected to genetic results and are more often connected to alterations in the microbiome. This is where genetic and DNA testing can play an even bigger role in healing. Your unique genetic makeup affects how you metabolize, transport, and absorb critical compounds and also how you detoxify various chemicals and carcinogens. DNA testing can give you an understanding of how deficiency or toxicity may play a role in affecting gene function and certain health disorders that run in your family, and what you can actively do to decrease the probability of disease. After testing, there will be a customized action plan to change the ways that your genes express themselves through modifications to your diet, physical activity, lifestyle, and environment to bring your body into balance and thriving health.

If you are having symptoms and unsure if you have an autoimmune disorder, give us a call and schedule a visit. Let’s figure it out. If you have a known diagnosed autoimmune disorder, and the traditional treatment plans are not working for you, please give our office a call. We will take the time to determine the underlying cause so we can accurately formulate natural treatment plans that can help heal you from the inside out.

Priapus Shot for Men - An Effective Solution for Erectile Dysfunction

An astonishing 52% of men suffer from Erectile dysfunction according to recent studies. 40% of men are affected by age 40 and nearly 70% of men are affected by age 70. While it is normal to have occasional difficulty maintaining an erection, it can be disruptive to sexual wellness, lower self-esteem, and decrease confidence in a man when it starts to occur more frequently.

Erectile Dysfunction is the inability to maintain an erection firm enough for satisfying sexual activity. There are a variety of factors that contribute to ED, including psychological mindset, blood circulation, structural concerns (prostate), and penis size. Men are more likely to develop ED with age, smoking, weight gain, type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, Peyronie’s, prostate cancer treatments, as well as taking many medications that are known to cause ED (see link for medications - https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/004024.htm).

The P-Shot is short for Priapus shot, which is a non-surgical treatment that uses platelet rich plasma to regenerate tissue, accelerate healing, correct ED and Peyronie’s disease. PRP is rich in bioactive proteins and growth factors which stimulate cellular and collagen regeneration and improves circulation. The actual therapy involves drawing a small amount of a patient’s blood, running it through a centrifuge to separate out the concentrated platelets, and then injecting the PRP back into the penile area with a small needle. The procedure is quick, involves no pain and no downtime. Some of the benefits include:

Yes! This happens because of the cellular and collagen regeneration in addition to the improved blood flow to the penis. Results may vary, but some men experience up to 1 inch in length as well as up to ½ inch in girth.

Yes, we do not recommend the P-shot for men that have low platelet counts or skin cancer near the treatment area.

Is there any limitations after getting the P-shot?

There are no physical limitations. You can even have sexual intercourse the same day as the procedure. However, we advise that you do not take anti-inflammatory medications for 24 hours before and after the procedure as the medications can interfere with the results.

Hair loss - Let's get to the ROOT of the problem.

Are you losing your hair? Are you literally pulling more hair out trying to figure this out? Are you sick of spending money on products that don't work? This may come as a surprise but it is normal to shed between 50 to 100 hairs per day. Shedding hair will regrow in the hair follicle, whereas hair loss occurs when the follicle stops producing hair. When hair shedding becomes excessive or goes beyond 6 to 9 months, it will not stop until you identify and shut down the cause. It can be frustrating to determine, but it comes down to a few major subsets of underlying conditions that cause hair loss or excessive shedding.

There is a test now available at BodyLogics and Aesthetics that pinpoints your specific cause and breaks it down into 7 categories. Treatment is based on DNA and has a lot to do with how your body processes things. For example, Minoxidil is FDA approved for treating hair loss, but occasionally it doesn't work or it only works temporarily. Did you know that if you have a genetic variant with a gene called SULT1A1 that Minoxidil may not work? Minoxidil Sulfotransferase Enzyme (SULT1A1) variants predict response to minoxidil treatment. Additionally, some individuals have a predisposition to a variant that leads to increased DHT levels and hair growth inhibition. The treatment recommendation may involve oral or topical DHT blockers in standard to higher doses depending on the gene expression. On the other hand, there may not even be a problem with DHT and taking prescription DHT blockers would have no clinical indication, serve no purpose, and may even create untoward side effects.

In fact, there may be genetic variants that exert influence on the effectiveness of other prescriptions used for hair loss such as steroids, antifungal medications, or other DHT blockers such as Spironolactone or Dutasteride. Additionally, vitamins, minerals or antioxidants all affect hair growth. Checking your vitamin blood levels may reveal deficiencies, but it does not reveal a person’s DNA methylation. This is a critical piece because decoding the genetic variants significantly help with effective treatment. After the test is completed, the best treatment options will be available based on your predictive responses, genetic profile and may involve a compound prescription to fit your precise needs.

It will be worth the money spent on the test versus the time wasted and money spent on hair products that don’t work.

Pellet implants are a unique way to treat hormone imbalances into the body. Customized to meet your individual needs, pellets are compounded hormones made from organic plant materials, which have the same molecular structure of those hormones found in the body. In a simple, quick in-office procedure, a prescribed number of rice-grain-sized bioidentical hormone

pellets are inserted by making a small incision in the skin of the buttocks under local anesthesia. The pellets will release steady small amounts of hormones directly into your bloodstream for an average of several months. For women, it generally lasts about 3 - 5 months. For men, it lasts as long as 6 months. The length of time is dependent upon cardiac output and metabolism. Patients with a higher cardiac output tend to metabolize faster.

           Benefits of Hormone Pellet Therapy

Considered the gold standard of hormonal therapy treatments, bioidentical hormone pellets are used to treat men and women with low hormone levels. They have the same molecular structure as natural human hormones and work the same way. Delivering these medications in pellet form has several benefits:

            — Pellets supply a consistent level of hormones released in the bloodstream

           Closest to nature

            — Pellets mimic your body’s natural delivery system more closely than any other method.

            — You don’t need to worry about remembering to take your medication daily. Hormone pellets only need to be inserted 2-4 times per year depending on what on your physician prescribes and what works best for your body.

           — Pellet therapy bypasses the liver, sending hormones directly into the bloodstream, and avoiding certain side effects of oral medications.

            Menopause -

The most common use of BHRT is to treat the symptoms of menopause in women. These symptoms can include hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, sleep problems, fatigue, mid-section weight gain, loss of muscle mass, foggy thinking, and mood changes.

            Low Testosterone -

Levels of testosterone normally decline with age. Some people have no symptoms, but it can cause men and women to experience low libido, sexual problems, hair loss, fatigue, loss of muscle and bone mass, fat gain (think beer belly for men), mood issues and memory problems.

            Loss of Bone Density-

Postmenopausal osteoporosis affects women during the first decade following menopause. Bones become brittle, fragile, and easy to fracture. This is one of the most common postmenopausal problems doctors treat with bioidentical hormone pellet therapy.

            Sexual Dysfunction-

BHRT may help with vaginal dryness in women, decreased libido in both sexes, and sexual functioning issues in men.

            Muscle and Strength Loss -

Men and women can lose muscle mass and strength as hormone levels decrease. Hormone replacement may help patients continue enjoying their favorite sports, activities and improve their overall quality of life.

            Mood Disorders -

Hormonal changes in menopause or andropause (in men) can cause or worsen mood swings, anxiety disorders, or depression. In addition to worry, fear, agitation, irritability, nervousness, and irrational thoughts, patients can have physical symptoms — rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, nausea, numbness, lightheadedness, shakiness, and high blood pressure.

Who Can Benefit from Pellet Hormone Therapy?

Pellet hormone therapy may benefit people who have symptoms of hormone imbalance related to age or other factors. In addition to serious medical conditions, as hormone levels decline, both men and women can feel less like “themselves” than when they were younger. They may not have the strength or energy they once had, sex may be difficult or uncomfortable, they may gain or lose weight, and they may be more sensitive to heat and cold. All kinds of things can change, from hair and memory loss, when the body isn’t producing its optimal level of hormones.

Who Should Avoid Pellet Hormone Therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy does have potential for risks and side effects which can vary from individual to individual, based on a patient’s medical history and lifestyle. You should always consult carefully with your doctor about the potential pros and cons for you. Some issues may be better or worse with pellet delivery than oral or cream delivery.

Weight gain is seemingly a perpetual problem. It does not happen overnight, and the struggle is real. We live in a world of constant stress and turmoil, affecting our sleep, eating times and exercise habits. Most of our food supply is processed and lacks nutritional value. Honestly, at this point we truly know where the evil resides with our food, but we still create these bad lifestyle habits and ignore how it is affecting our health until we reach the point where it becomes so uncomfortable that we feel compelled to make a change. However, even though we know the weight gain occurred gradually over months to years, it suddenly becomes an emergency to get the weight off as quickly as possible. We find ourselves frantically searching for weight loss plans that give immediate gratification and results, only to be disappointed later.

Why do these plans inevitably not last? Most weight loss plans do not address the actual reason for the weight gain, so there is a temporary fix but no long lasting results. Here's some truth to the matter - any diet that involves severe calorie restriction or cuts out entire food groups is simply not going to work. Our bodies do not understand weight loss - but it does understand survival! At some point the starvation mode slows down your metabolism in an effort to burn less calories - an interesting twist when you’re trying to burn more!! Think about that. Is your goal to lose weight now and then gain it back later?

Sustainable weight loss requires the right mindset. It takes a lot of willpower, courage, and patience, but you’re here. You’re ready. You got this, and you know that things have to change. You should be prepared to fully examine your eating habits, timing of meals, and the quantity as well as quality of food you are eating. For example, traveling does not give you the green light to eat whatever you want. Being away from home should not be a factor. Rather, you can be disciplined and conscious of your dietary choices and still pick interesting and healthy choices. Again, realizing that most of our food is overprocessed and packed with poison, you will most likely need to supplement with vitamins to achieve optimal nutritional wellness. If you are having any digestion issues, abdominal pain or bloating after eating, it is actually not normal. Your body is reacting. You may have food sensitivities or intolerances and it is worth taking the time to figure that out. Perhaps a peptide to heal the gut may be helpful.

Recognize patterns of depression and anxiety. Take a look at how you sleep. Lack of sleep reduces fat loss, while deeper sleep repairs brain cells and regulates inflammation. Are you exercising at all? Not to point out the obvious, but totally pointing out the obvious! In addition to cleaning up your diet, it is important to stagger cardiovascular exercise with strength training to achieve better results, burn more calories, shed the fat, and build muscle.

Let's check if you have any hormone imbalances or nutritional deficiencies - these are often roadblocks to success! It could be the drop in testosterone or estrogen causing you to gain the weight. Zinc, calcium, or chromium deficiencies can cause sugar cravings, while an increase in cortisol can cause salt cravings as well as lead to mid waist weight gain, insulin resistance, obstructive sleep apnea, metabolic syndrome, or even Diabetes type 2 - all of which cause massive weight gain! Drops in Vitamin D, Ferritin levels or thyroid hormones can also make losing weight more difficult. Leptin resistance decreases the ability of leptin to suppress appetite or use energy, leaving you feeling constantly hungry despite having excessive amounts of body fat.

Water retention secondary to kidney disease or congestive heart failure could be a factor in causing the weight gain. Occasionally, water retention is caused by medication. Medications such as birth control pills, antipsychotics, antidepressants, beta-blockers, or medications for epilepsy have been known to cause weight gain, but are often overlooked and rarely addressed. Some medications suppress your appetite, but also may change the way your body absorbs nutrients. Long term steroid use for asthma or COPD can make you extra hungry, leading to weight gain from overeating. Understanding the side effects of medications is key, and the goal would be to stop feeding your body synthetic material that it does not recognize. There are times where medications can help boost your metabolism and help you lose weight, but it should be temporary and definitely not be part of your long term plan. It is always best to go as natural as possible and let your body do what it is designed to do, which is maintain homeostasis. Keep in mind that your body does not want to do that when you have foreign material interrupting the communication in the normal processing of methylation cycles. Consider weaning off any medications that are causing more harm than good.
